Quality Assurance Technician - Oakland, CA (4/12/18)

We are celebrating our 93rd year as a retail roaster! 

We are looking for a Production QA Technician who is comfortable in a manufacturing environment.  The successful candidate possesses a high degree of accuracy, industry knowledge and eye for detail to ensure 100% compliance of product and processes to company and regulatory standards. 


  • Oversee programs, processes, and documents to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures and regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in and support all Plant audits and 3rd party inspections such as by the AIB, QAI, FDA, Kosher, State inspections, etc.
  • Oversee, maintain, modify and/or implement product quality auditing for production floor.  This will include both quantitative and qualitative measures.
  • Conduct visual random audits to confirm that coffee roasted and packaged adheres to the New Item form.
  • Maintain and oversee the master item specification file.  Act as gate keeper for new item additions and current item change process.
  • Perform quality analysis on raw materials, roasted coffee and ground coffee using appropriate instruments. 
  • Conduct coffee roasting for batch samples.  Prepare tastings (cuppings) to determine coffee roasted meets its taste profile.  
  • Prepare samples for in-house customer tastings and/or to ship to customers. 
  • Oversee and maintain QA lab/Cupping room facility and equipment.
  • Interface with our Buyer to establish quality standards for the receipt of purchased products and materials.
  • Oversee scheduling and delivery of some raw materials into facility.
  • Conducts audits of outbound shipments to ensure Customer Shipping requirements are met.
  • Conduct training sessions in a variety of subjects for other employees.
  • Maintains a variety of records related to the above duties.
  • Cross-functional back-up for Production Coordinator and Shipping.
  • Other tasks as assigned.



  • At least three years’ experience in Production quality assurance, or related. College coursework in a related field can be substituted for experience.  Food manufacturing experience necessary.
  • Experience in adherence to current processes and regulations. Experience in 3rd party organic and food safety inspections. Ability to recognize where process improvement is needed, and develop and implement new policies or procedures.
  • Excellent planning, organizational and follow through abilities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage projects and elicit support across departments.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment where continuous improvement is expected.
