The Quality Assurance (QA) Manager will ensure that correct measures are in place to provide for the production of safe, quality products that meet all applicable government regulations for the food and dietary supplement industries.  The QA Manager will implement, manage, and monitor various quality assurance and food safety programs, and will have the direct responsibility for maintaining compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP’s), HACCP, SQF/GFSI and customer requirements.  The QA Manager will also maintain the company training matrix and arrange for safety training of all staff.  Additional roles include facilitating in-house and third-party auditing programs, as well as providing backup to the Gluten Free Materials Management Program.  The QA Manager will also be responsible for the oversight of the QA Line Auditors.

This position includes regular interaction with other departments including Manufacturing, Sanitation, Quality Control, Research & Development, as well as upper management.  Applicant should be familiar with basic laboratory skills, be able to use a computer (Microsoft Office suite), be proficient in math, and have excellent communication skills.

What You’ll Do
As a Mattson Commercialization Manager, you’ll be working on:

Product Development

  • Develop new products across multiple product categories and throughout all phases of product development – from initial bench development to commercial launch, while considering critical technical issues such as: food safety, food stability, shelf-life, scalability, etc.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects with overlapping deadlines
  • Write technical and project status reports, protocols, finished product specifications, plant trial protocol/summary documents
  • Solve complex technical challenges related to the development, manufacturing, and/or improvement of food products and processes and make appropriate technical recommendations

Process Development/Scale up

  • Identify and qualify contract manufacturers for specific project needs, and support site assessments as required
  • Lead or support the commercialization of Mattson developed products from pilot plant to scale-up at a wide range of client plants and co-manufacturers
  • Provide subject matter expertise on a range of food product and manufacturing technologies

Food Safety/Sanitation and Compliance

  • Implement, maintain and enforce Food Safety/Sanitation policies and procedures in other food related areas of the facility (Food Service Pilot Plant, Laboratory)
  • Work collaboratively to ensure that all projects and activities meet/support Federal Standards for GMP, HACCP and FSMA

Professionalism and Leadership

  • Provide mentorship to technical team as needed throughout development process/scale up to continue to build internal expertise
  • Work closely with all employees to deliver excellent client support


About You

  • BS or MS in Food Science or related discipline
  • 5 to 7 years of food or beverage product development with commercialization experience, ideally with a minimum of 5 years in new product development
  • Demonstrate capabilities in the support of the scale up and commercialization process across multiple technologies and product types
  • Strong project management skills and independently manage multiple projects
  • Work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Willing to travel up to 35% of the time domestically and occasionally internationally, or as required by client and project needs
  • Ability to lift 30 to 40 lb.

POSITION TITLE: R&D Technical Project Associate or Manager

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Business Development

SCOPE: To effectively manage and maintain technical records of products, including formulations, packaging, artwork changes, set-up of new or reformulated products, and management of all co-manufacturers. To advise on product development or reformulation projects with guidelines from Production/Quality Control.

I. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

      • Project Management
        • Responsible to provide overall project coordination for all new and existing products. Interface with all appropriate departments and activities such as purchasing, production, sales, customer service, finance, & quality assurance to ensure that all required information is accurately maintained and implemented.
        • Maintain database of finished product information, including formulations, nutritional information, quality assurance documents, etc. Organize information to ensure accuracy; archive any obsolete documents.
        • Assist in the label approval process to ensure accurate information is available and compliant with appropriate regulatory agencies.
        • Coordinate with Sales, Customer service and/or Production for the development of new items/packaging and private label projects.
        • Provide direct support and technical expertise to the Sales, Customer Service and Quality Assurance departments.
        • Responsible for obtaining all necessary internal approvals with regard to formulation, processing, packaging or label changes.
        • Manage all outsourced technical or culinary projects with freelance consultants/agencies, including product formulation projects, shelf-life testing, and/or recipe development.
      • Supplier & Co-manufacturer Management
        • Responsible for maintaining agreements and relationships with external manufacturers; collecting appropriate technical and food safety documentation; provide direction on product development needs; coordinate pricing and packaging requirements
        • Assist Production Manager in sourcing new suppliers for raw materials and packaging
      • Business Development
        • Investigate and recommend new co-manufacturers and/or new products from co-manufacturers and advise on new products that would benefit the company’s goals
        • Compile competitive product and manufacturer information and advise company on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
        • Monitor and research trends in food products/ingredients, processing, equipment, and marketing.


  • Complete all necessary forms and reports as needed in a timely manner.
  • Assist Quality Control Manager and Customer Service Manager in the development of finished product specifications and completion of customer documentation.
  • Complete other related duties when assigned.


  • Assist immediate supervisor, officers, management, and outside consultants as needed or directed.
  • Follow the Company’s safety and quality guidelines.

Senior Quality Assurance Manager
Beverage Manufacturer

This person in this position plays a key role managing the Quality Assurance team in our Richmond, CA plant where we make cold-brew coffee using our unique, patented process. You’ll provide strategic direction and management of the implementation and execution of all programs related to food quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. This hands-on role works on-site at the plant, reporting to the plant’s General Manager.    

Duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide oversight of and direction to Kohana’s Food Safety & Quality Department and facilitate completion of all responsibilities under the company, regulatory, and industry policies and practices; 
  • Drive continuous improvement of the product quality and the QA team, collaborating closely with diverse, cross-functional groups to instill and manage a strong QA- and safety-oriented culture;
  • Proactively identify food safety and quality risks in the product or process development process, communicating risks to cross-functional stakeholders and offering solutions to mitigate those risks; 
  • Be a subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders as it relates to food safety and quality;
  • Manage active internal audit process to ensure that all support systems supporting Kohana’s GFSI (SQF) standard are operating as intended, plus oversee all SQF audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections (CDPH, CCOF, Star-K);
  • Work closely with Plant GM, HR, and other to keep training and orientation programs relevant, effective, active, and reflective the current standards that address product quality and food safety;
  • Directly responsible for the management and continued development of all compliance relationships to include FDA, CDPH, CCOF, Star-K, Non-GMO Project; and
  • Work with QA team members and others on a variety of projects as the business grows such as product specifications, supplier approvals, traceability, incident management, and the Company’s Product Recall Plan.

Minimum qualifications for the position include the following:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject such as food science, microbiology, or similar;
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in the food or beverage manufacturing industry, with progressively increasing responsibility for food safety and quality programs, including systems design, management, and implementation;
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience successfully managing others working in the food quality and safety; 
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills, systems-thinker, and proactive, strategic problem-solver who can anticipate potential problems before they occur;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills coupled with effective, positive interpersonal skills and strong EQ; 
  • Must be organized with meticulous attention to detail in order to respond to a range of priorities in an appropriate manner; 
  • Necessary certifications include PCQI, HAACP, and SQF Practitioner with Better Process Control School certification a plus; and
  • Strong computer skills including use of MS Office and other relevant software.

General Summary
As the Provisions Product Quality and Safety lead you are responsible for the management and improvement of all quality assurance and food safety systems at Patagonia Provisions.  You will be responsible for elevating and monitoring all manufacturing and supply chain partners by providing risk assessments of new products and facilities to the product team. In this role you will also support the Patagonia retail and sales teams in all FSQA related efforts. You will manage all related documentation by creating a system of policies and procedures with the goal of ensuring the larger supply chain, sourcing and product related activities are completed in manner that identifies risk, establishes control measures and monitors results.

You must be highly detail focused as you will be responsible for organizing large amounts of incoming information and synthesizing that information into actions aimed at improving product quality and consistency.  Knowledge of food safety, quality control procedures, food safety regulations, and a passion for continuous improvement are essential for this role.
