General Purpose:
Ensures that all equipment is operating effectively and efficiently.  Must have excellent proficiency in preventative maintenance, over-hauls, modification, fabrication, welding, and mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and repair. Must also have working knowledge of machine shop equipment, excellent trouble shooting and problem solving skills.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative maintenance and/or repairs of production and processing equipment as well as utility related equipment, following all safety procedures
  • Support the installation of new equipment
  • Assist the machine operators with training or troubleshooting to minimize equipment downtime
  • Ensure all repairs are documented
  • Foster teamwork consistent with our company and plant Mission, Vision, and Core Values
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures
  • Attends required training, including but not limited to: GMP’s, HAACP, SQF, Safety, etc.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for Continuous Improvement to include: Lean, Kaizen, 5S, and Leader Standard Work
  • Follow all DFA GMP’s and work in a manner consistent with all corporate and regulatory, food safety, quality and sanitation requirements
  • Perform other tasks and jobs as assigned

Minimum Requirements:
Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have two (2) years formal mechanical education certificate or equivalent work experience doing maintenance type work

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to perform minor electrical work (ex. change pump motors, diagnose motor control problems, etc.)
  • Must know pneumatics, solenoid valves, and air cylinders
  • Must supply and be able to use standard maintenance tools
  • Must have the ability to perform minor projects from planning to installation.  (Typically, this includes non-sanitary piping, drain lines, vacuum lines.)
  • Must have the ability to perform routine repairs in a safe and timely fashion (ex. rebuilding product pumps, water pumps, sanitary valves, samplers, packaging equipment, sifters, piping leaks).
  • Must have the ability to perform routine preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment, identify any abnormal conditions, and maintain appropriate records
  • Must have the ability to perform basic welding for repair and fabrication (mig/tig/stick).
  • Must have the ability to follow process control computer variables, schematics, and diagnose system problems.
  • Must have the ability to assist other mechanics on more complicated repairs in a safe and useful manner.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills necessary to foster cooperation and effectively communicate with others.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to lift 60 lbs.

Licensing and Certification:

  • Electrical, welding, boiler, refrigeration, waste water, or plumbing licenses or certificates are a plus

Food Safety & Quality Manager
 
About the Role
As the Food Safety and Quality Manager you will be a key member of the Quality and Regulatory team responsible for providing strategic direction and implementation of all necessary food safety and quality programs and ensuring the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance of JUST branded products. This individual must demonstrate strong leadership skills with the ability to act collaboratively, proactively, and consistently engaged to find solutions that bring forth new ideas to achieve JUST objectives.
 
Responsibilities
The Food Safety and Quality Manager owns two key functions: 1) Contract and External Partner Manufacturing and 2) Quality Systems. One of the two may be the primary focus, depending on background and team needs. Willingness and ability to shift responsibilities and focus to address business needs is a mandatory part of this role.
 
Contract and External Partner Manufacturing
  • Provide strategic direction and guidance for the development, implementation, and compliance of all necessary quality programs at manufacturing facilities (contract, internal, and licensing as applicable), warehouses and raw material suppliers
  • Work closely with the JUST R&D teams to ensure food safety requirements and quality standards are incorporated in the development process; provide support during plant trials and production runs for product launches
  • Responsible for ensuring JUST manufacturing partners are onboarded and qualified prior to commercial production – this includes driving and coordinating all related activities
  • Audit and review manufacturing partners’ facilities and quality systems to ensure compliance with JUST Food Safety and QA expectations
  • Ensure new ingredients and new suppliers are qualified prior to their use in JUST products
  • Manage relationships with external manufacturing quality departments, monitor performance against JUST procedures, specifications and KPIs. Work in partnership with external partner quality contacts to resolve quality issues and complaints in a timely manner

Quality Systems

  • Lead the design, creation, implementation and maintenance of JUST Corporate and Manufacturing (Internal and External) Quality Management Systems by working cross-functionally with internal and external partners
  • Manage, administer and drive continuous implementation for all applicable electronic databases and software related to Food Safety Quality Assurance and provide training to relevant stake-holders
  • Provide onboarding and continued education for employees - ensuring their knowledge and implementation of food safety guidelines is current and compliant with JUST and regulatory guidelines
  • Manage internal Food Safety and Quality controlled document systems, nonconformance, CAPA, Change Control, internal audit activities, and other Food Safety and Quality related programs
  • Develop product evaluation programs including quality scoring, gold standard, shelf life, etc. and tools to monitor internal performance metrics and drive continuous improvement
  • Manage internal raw material and supplier review programs which include risk assessment, food safety & quality programs review, and overall adherence to FSMA and regulatory requirements

About You

Education and Experience

  • B.S. or M.S. in Food Science, Microbiology, or similar degree
  • At least 5 years of progressive food industry experience in food safety and quality assurance
  • Minimum of 2 to 5 years of experience in leading an FDA/or USDA-regulated factory food safety and quality program
  • Experience in developing, implementing, certifying and reliably maintaining GFSI food safety and quality management programs
  • Proven track record of acting as a food and safety expert making business and quality risk-based decisions and recommendations based on scientific, regulatory and quality evidence

Skills & Qualifications

  • Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI), Better Process Control School (BCCS), and HACCP certifications preferred
  • Excellent critical thinking and time management skills – ability to act on your feet and prioritize
  • Strong ability to confidently and effectively communicate strategic guidance and objectives to enable cross-functional collaboration to set the gold standard for quality and food safety
  • In-depth knowledge of food microbiology, product sampling plans and environmental monitoring programs as well as US FDA FSMA regulations, one or more GFSI schemes, and cGMPs
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced rapidly changing environment

Additional Information & Requirements

This is a full-time position. Travel up to 50% is typical for the role.  While there will be standard days and hours of work, the positions requires overnight on-call duty and the ability to work during non-standard hours when the need arises.

Project/Process Engineer

 

About the Role

As the Project/Process Engineer, you will play a critical role in the overall success of the organization by helping design, build, and commercialize new manufacturing processes, as well as driving continuous improvement of existing systems and processes. You will work cross-functionally with both internal and external partners to develop and improve processes at all levels of the organization and supply chain. The role will report to the VP of Engineering, but work closely with the Process Sciences, Product Development, and Manufacturing groups.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and communicate process designs through the use of process flow diagrams, P&ID’s, process narratives and heat and mass balances.  Utilize data developed in collaboration with Process Sciences, Pilot Plant, Food Sciences, and Product Development to scale up processes to commercial;
  • Identify equipment and suppliers to meet process requirements.  Develop and execute capital projects to implement plant and process requirements and improvements;
  • Work closely with our partner manufacturing facilities to scale up and optimize JUST processes. Coordinate capital projects and process improvements that enhance safety, product quality, and profitability – often times creatively adapting to changing timelines and priorities;
  • Lead shop-floor validation and capability studies at our partner manufacturing facilities to support continuous improvement and cost savings efforts;
  • Visit co-manufacturers and make recommendations for capital and non-capital based efficiency improvements, and execute related projects;
  • Become an expert on complete production process from protein source to waste water and an overall vital contributor to our growing company;

About You

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of BS in Chemical, Mechanical or Biological Sciences Engineering;
  • 2+ years of experience in process manufacturing environment, preferably in food, dairy, fermentation and/or pharmaceutical facilities;
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Process engineering and design including creating H&M balances, process flow diagrams, scaling up process from pilot to commercial scales and/or,
    • Project engineering including leading projects from concept through operations, equipment specification, installation, and commissioning ;
  • Experience in Sanitary 3-A, USDA, and FDA food processing as well as HAACP, OSHA, and other norms for food production a plus!

Food Scientist/ Senior Scientist

 

About the Role

In this role, you will be a key member of our Food Science team involved in physicochemical property characterization of new ingredients and developing innovative food products using these ingredients. You will be responsible for implementing assays to characterize functional properties of our proprietary ingredients as it relates to food product performance. You will also be engaged in application testing and food formulation development with these ingredients.  You will be a critical link between our research team identifying new plant ingredients for screening and our process engineers and culinary chefs.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team in the product development process from ideation to launch including formulation development, maintenance of stability testing and transferring technical know-how to engineers supporting scale up activities
  • Investigate and assess new ingredients and technologies for product improvements 
  • Design and execute experiments to systematically characterize functional properties such as but not limited to solubility, gelation, emulsification, rheology etc. of plant based ingredients and their performance in target product applications. 
  • Create prototypes with identified protein as part of new product development projects
  • Design, coordinate and conduct sensory studies
  • Conduct trouble shooting and root cause analysis for product maintenance issues
  • Keep systematic and thorough records to support internal clients, external clients and intellectual property strategy  
  • Lead applied research by coordinating work streams with cross-functional teams of biochemists, bioinformaticians, process engineers and culinary experts providing status updates, key technical outcomes and project plans
  • Serve as a technical expert and proactively collaborate with other R&D functions to ensure successful completion of projects
  • Manage multiple projects and adhere to fast timelines

About You

Education & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Food Science or other relevant field with 3 - 5 years of industry experience
  • Solid background in food chemistry, food microbiology and food engineering. Flavor experience is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience in experimental design, data analysis and statistical analyses
  • Experience with material characterization such as rheology, microscopy, particle size analysis, etc. is a plus.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficiency in food ingredient and/or food formulation development across multiple food product categories.
  • Skilled in application development using laboratory equipment and pilot plant equipment

Scientist, Analytical Chemistry

 

About the Role

We are looking for a highly motivated, hands-on Scientist to be part of JUST’s Analytical Chemistry Team. You will play a critical role in support of our ongoing research and development projects.  As a leader in the analytical chemistry team, you will be exposed to the full spectrum of projects in Cellular Agriculture, Process Sciences, and Product Development. This position is responsible for all aspects of utilizing advanced analytical instrumentation to address routine and novel analytical needs. From sample prep and instrument operation to data analysis and reporting, this role provides end-to-end analytical expertise to all R&D efforts. You will develop and validate new methods while performing and managing routine analyses.

Responsibilities:

As the Scientist, Analytical Chemistry, you will work with collaborate and work with the Analytical Chemistry Team to…

  • Perform and provide guidance in routine day-to-day analyses
  • Drive method development and validation of qualitative and quantitative analyses using HPLC and GC
  • Sample preparation and proximate analysis of bulk components (protein, fats, carbohydrates, ash and moisture).
  • Proactively maintenance and troubleshoot various sample prep techniques and analytical instruments
  • Properly calibrate and create quality checks to verify performance and define the error or variability of analytical instruments and methods
  • Develop, validate and document analytical methods and write clear and concise SOPs.
  • Summarize and report method development efforts in collaborative meetings with other R&D groups
  • Always conduct work in a safe manner, consistent with best practices in laboratory safety and environmental stewardship guidelines
  • Manage all aspects of the analytical laboratory including procurement, inventory, managing service contracts, data management and organization
  • Coordinate and utilize external analytical resources as needed

About You

Education and Experience:

  • PhD with 5+ years or BS/MS with 10+ years of relevant industrial experience
  • Experience with chromatography systems (GC or LC) and advanced detection systems such as Mass Spectrometry is required.
  • Experience with lab management and method development required
  • Previous experience in amino acid and peptide analysis is a plus
  • Experience mentoring / managing junior lab members preferred

Director of Protein & Analytical Chemistry

 

About the Role

As the Director of Protein & Analytical Chemistry, you will be a key member of the R&D leadership team and essential in producing sustainable and cost-effective food ingredients and products. As the leader of the Protein Chemistry Department, you will manage the day-to-day activities of the Protein and Analytical Chemistry teams, while ensuring effective collaboration with cross-functional R&D groups.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Protein Chemistry department and act as an exemplary role model, providing technical guidance and subject matter expertise, including protein separation, characterization and analysis
  • Manage and mentor the group in method development and thorough statistical data analysis for clear conclusions
  • Partner with respective R&D leaders to ensure cross-functional collaboration with various groups including Process Sciences, Food Sciences, and Product Development, to assist in developing correlations for quality and functionality
  • Develop protein chemistry methods/tools to provide fundamental scientific support for process and product development.
  • Assist in regulatory, technology transfer and business development activities as needed

About You

Education and Experience

  • PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, biophysics, biotechnology or related field
  • 10+ years of relevant industrial experience - protein engineering (via chemical & biological methods) and regulatory filings is a plus.
  • Previous experience in managing and leading scientific teams in support of R&D and product development.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Impeccable communication and leadership skills
  • Expertise in protein characterization using chromatography, FPLC, electrophoresis, mass-spectrometry and other physio-chemical methods of structure-function relationship of various types of proteins
  • Thorough knowledge of structure-function relationship of various types of proteins

Senior Director, Food Science

 

About the Role

As the Sr. Director, Food Science, you will be a key member of our R&D leadership team directing all aspects of food product related research and development, working cross functionally and collaboratively with our culinary chefs, protein chemists, process engineers, quality specialists, and regulatory group, ensuring creation of high quality and safe food products.

As the leader of the Food Science group, you will be responsible for managing, developing and cultivating your team to foster this culture of cross-functional collaboration and innovative thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage Food Sciences group, providing technical guidance and subject matter expertise in developing protein-based food products
  • Engage and assist in all aspects of product creation, scale-up, manufacturing and product maintenance
  • Define strategy on new product development and continuous improvement of existing product categories – from technical feasibility to implementation
  • Collaborate closely with product development, protein chemistry, process sciences, engineering, quality assurance and regulatory teams to ensure successful completion of tasks
  • Work closely with product management group to ensure timelines are developed and up to date, project status communicated to stakeholders, and risks and dependencies highlighted
  • Establish external collaborations and partnerships to further product R&D

About You

Education & Experience

  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience and an established track record of accomplishments
  • Experience launching high quality, consumer focused food products; experience leading novel products from concept to launch is a plus

This is an entry level position in quality assurance.

Responsibilities included but not limited to:

  • Assist QA Manager with planning, prioritizing, and completing tasks; recommend changes in procedures, standards, test methods and equipment to improve quality;
  • Helping QA manager in implementing and/or training a new / updated policy or program
  • Performing analysis of raw, work-in-process, and finished products through inspection. Analysis includes visual, weight, size, color, etc. on an hourly basis
  • Perform Pre-Op Inspections and document including ATP swabbing of the production area
  • Perform in-process cGMP checks/audit (may include personnel cGMP, Blade Checks on the packaging line, proper tools and chemical storage, sanitizer towels storage and proper usage etc.)
  • Perform all quality checks and preventive control points monitoring of the HARPC program (temperature logs, sanitation, labeling checks, net weight, package integrity, package integrity checks and/or organoleptic)
  • Work with receivers to verify the documentation of temperature and inspection of delivery trucks (Assure accurate completion of Receiving logs)
  • Calibrate and inspect test equipment, such as Scales, Thermometers, Refractometer, etc. Ensure calibration logs are complete.
  • Maintain and organize Food Safety and Quality Assurance daily records
  • Monitor / evaluate cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Equipment and work areas must be kept organized, clean and sanitary throughout the shift. Ensure proper care of equipment.
  • Maintain and inventory product retains
  • Conduct environmental swabbing and assist in improving environmental monitoring program.
  • Complete shelf life tests of product samples as required.
  • Assist in internal and external food safety and security inspections/audits
  • Inspect production room, Cooler, Freezer and dry storage for out of date products/ ensure FIFO is followed, proper allergen segregation
  • Print all Food Safety and Quality logs/forms to refill binders as departments require
  • Assure and maintain all chemical label & SDS up to date
  • Advise/respond to any identified risk in the operation under QA Manager’s supervision
  • Report serious deviations of food safety/quality to supervisors or managers
  • Conducting internal audit that involves shadowing or observing other personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working conditions

  • Must be able to work in warm and humid, occasionally in refrigerated environment.
  • May be required to have a shift rotation: early morning, afternoon, and overnight shift.
  • Overtime and weekend work as required
