Quality Assurance Manager
Food Safety & Quality Assurance - Dublin, CA

The Food Safety & Quality Assurance Department has an opening for a Quality Assurance Manager. This position is located in Dublin, California. 

Position Purpose 

This position is responsible for assuring vendor compliance with company food safety and quality standards. 

The position utilizes personal experience and expertise in the areas of food safety, food quality, good manufacturing, and sanitation practices to provide supplier assessment and approval status for external manufacturing sites. The position reports directly to the Senior Quality Assurance Manager for the Own Brands private label business. 

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Manage the supplier certification process including carrying out risk assessment of supplier programs, conducting an on-site audit and communicating outcomes effectively to both internal and external parties. 
  • Manage the Supplier Quality Improvement Program and quantify its effectiveness by analyzing consumer feedback or process data and utilizing technical skills such as SPC, Excel, Mini Tab. 
  • Coordinate product recalls and withdrawals with suppliers and serve as a department expert for crisis management as it relates to product safety. 
  • Act as a liaison for regulatory requests and inquiries such as FDA, USDA, State Inspectors. 
  • Prioritize tasks based on risk, importance and urgency. Be able to meet deliverables in a timely manner. 
  • Provide support to sales and business by facilitating key supplier meetings, conducting site visits, and working through any quality or safety issues with suppliers until they are resolved satisfactorily. 
  • Ensure the manufacturing sites can deliver on the expectations set forth in the supplier agreement, Own Brands policies, product formulations and finished good specifications. Communicate any potential gaps and risk exposures to both internal and external parities as needed. 
  • Enforce Albertsons Food Safety & Quality Assurance Policies with suppliers. 
  • Review and evaluate product quality, come up with a continuous improvement plan, or work on corrective actions with suppliers. 
  • Create and communicate executive reports on quality related issues and address key findings across multifunctional teams. 
  • Remain current with federal regulations as they relate to the Company’s products, GMP’s and analytical requirements, and ensure with supplier’s regulatory requirements are met. 
  • Develop and execute the SOPs as related to the Corporate Quality Assurance function. 
  • Manage the supplier Certificate of Analysis program to assure compliance with product specifications. 
  • Serve as a technical resource and provide guidance for Own Brands private label organization. 
  • Assist retail divisions in resolving product quality issues. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science, Meat Science, Microbiology, Engineering, or related scientific field 
  • 6 years Quality Management experience in a variety of food and/or general merchandise/health, beauty, pharmaceutical, cosmetic manufacturing, and processing environments 
  • Ability to analyze process capability data to assure compliance with specifications. Experience utilizing Process Improvement methods such as: SPC, DMAIC, 8D, Ishikawa, Six Sigma 
  • Working knowledge of AQL sampling plans in a manufacturing setting is preferred 
  • Supplier quality management, including audit experience, is required 
  • In-depth knowledge of food safety, product quality programs, preventive QC methods, HACCP/PCQI certified, GMP’s, environmental pathogen monitoring, allergen control and manufacturing process controls 
  • 2 years Quality Auditing experience preferred
    • GFSI (BRC, SQF, ISO 22,000, IFS, PrimusGFS) ASQ, or equivalent sector audit certification 
    • SA8000 certification or the ability to demonstrate knowledge of equivalent social responsibility programs 
    • Certification or working knowledge of animal welfare principles 
  • 2 years Laboratory experience is preferred 
  • Ability to motivate, manage, lead, and influence subordinates, peers, and superiors 
  • Strong computer skills including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint 
  • Excellent written/verbal communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, including strong management ability in a team-based culture. 
  • Thorough knowledge of US regulatory compliance requirements 
  • Independent thinker with the ability to manage a complex workload with changing priorities. Energetic and self-motivated with the ability to act with a sense of urgency and intensity

Managing Business 

Position Scope: 

The R&D Product Development Manager leads, and coordinates the technical activities of product improvement, innovation and new product development of Tropicale Foods in support of policies, goals, and business objectives. Manage and maintain all R&D technical documents and label information to conform with up-to-date regulatory requirements. This position works closely with both sales and operations in coordinating the development and commercialization of products for our end users. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Design and execute all stages of consumer centric product development – benchtop prototypes, consumer testing, conducting pilot plant trials and formula commissioning at full-scale manufacturing. 
  2. Manage various projects to develop new frozen dairy and specialty treat formulations, applications, and bench top samples for sales and customer evaluation within agreed upon time frame. Responsibilities extend to defining and managing the project review process. 
  3. Implement Research and Development (R&D) strategies around ingredient technologies and pipeline of innovative new products. 
  4. Manage a dynamic project portfolio related to frozen dairy and specialty treat products. 
  5. Plan and ensure documentation of plant trials for the successful commercialization of new products for company manufacturing sites and co-mans. 
  6. Identify and test new tools, technologies, processes, or ingredients to improve products or manufacturing capabilities. 
  7. Knowledge of current USDA, FDA regulations as they relate to the food processing industry. 
  8. Establish knowledgeable contacts with expertise in USDA, FDA regulations. 
  9. Develop products and processes with a defined Food Safety Plan. 
  10. Familiarity with Stage Gate Process in product development and the ability to manage the process. 
  11. Manage the development process to ensure documentation and traceability of work in files and lab notebooks. 
  12. Ensure all projects are repeatable both in the lab and on the production floor. 
  13. Understand the needs of the customer and their specific market segments. 
  14. Coordinate and participate in key customer product presentations.

  19. Work with purchasing and support the sourcing, evaluation of new suppliers to determine the best and most cost effective ingredients. 
  20. Ensure accurate technical and process specifications are completed as projects move toward commercialization. 
  21. Communicate with Sales, Customers, Operations, and Quality Assurance directly regarding project activities, design, specifications, and manufacturing issues. 
  22. Prepare and present technical presentations at customer visits and industry conferences. 
  23. Manage R&D lab budget, track key performance indicators (KPIs), coordinate customer projects and support business objectives and strategies to drive growth. 
  24. Perform supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Company’s policies and applicable laws for all direct reports. Responsibilities include planning, assigning and directing work, coaching, appraising performance, and training, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

In performance of these duties R&D Product Development Manager has the following responsibilities: 

  • Principle contact and liaison between sales and operation, production, purchasing and production planning. They ensure the sales and operations receive professional R&D service in a timely manner to ensure high equipment availability and performance.

We are looking for a Production QA Supervisor who is comfortable in a manufacturing environment.  The successful candidate possesses a high degree of accuracy, industry knowledge and eye for detail to ensure 100% compliance of product and processes to company and regulatory standards. You will have the opportunity to improve our quality systems, and work on passion projects as you expand the role.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee programs, processes, and documents to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures and regulatory agencies.
  • SQF Practitioner for the site. 
  • Lead all Plant audits and 3rd party inspections such as by the SQF, QAI, FDA, Kosher, State inspections, etc.
  • Own and maintain the QA Manual and QA procedures.  Ensure employees understand and follow procedures. Train others as needed.
  • Trend Quality and food safety related issues. Own the corrective action and root cause investigation process. 
  • Establish a supplier quality program ensuring quality standards for the receipt of purchased products and materials in conjunction with the Purchasing Manager.
  • Maintain and oversee the master item specification files.  Act as gate keeper for new item additions and current item change process.
  • Conduct mock recalls and mock traces. 
  • Oversee, maintain, modify and/or implement product quality auditing for production floor.  This will include both quantitative and qualitative measures.
  • Conduct audits to confirm that coffee roasted and packaged adheres to the item specifications.
  • Perform or supervise quality analysis on raw materials, roasted coffee and ground coffee using appropriate instruments. 
  • Conduct coffee roasting for batch samples as needed.  Prepare tastings (cuppings) to determine coffee roasted meets its taste profile.  
  • Prepare samples for in-house customer tastings and/or to ship to customers. Prepare QA related documentation for customers
  • Oversee and maintain QA lab/Cupping room facility and equipment.
  • Conduct audits of outbound shipments to ensure Customer Shipping requirements are met.
  • Conduct training sessions in a variety of subjects for other employees such as GMPs, SQF, Organic standards.
  • Maintains a variety of records related to the above duties.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Food manufacturing experience at an SQF certified facility is necessary. Experience as an SQF Auditor or in facilities with similar audit schemes may be accepted.
  • PCQI certified or great understanding of PCQI such that you can pass qualification after hire
  • Ability to work cross functionally elicit support to ensure food safety, organic, and quality metrics are met by other teams. 
  • Experience in 3rd party organic inspections desired. 
  • Ability to recognize where process improvement is needed, and develop and implement new policies or procedures.
  • Excellent planning, organizational and follow through abilities. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage projects and.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment where continuous improvement is expected. 
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

The Quality Assurance (QA) Manager will ensure that correct measures are in place to provide for the production of safe, quality products that meet all applicable government regulations for the food and dietary supplement industries.  The QA Manager will implement, manage, and monitor various quality assurance and food safety programs, and will have the direct responsibility for maintaining compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP’s), HACCP, SQF/GFSI and customer requirements.  The QA Manager will also maintain the company training matrix and arrange for safety training of all staff.  Additional roles include facilitating in-house and third-party auditing programs, as well as providing backup to the Gluten Free Materials Management Program.  The QA Manager will also be responsible for the oversight of the QA Line Auditors.

SCOPE: To effectively manage and maintain technical records of products, including formulations, packaging, artwork changes, set-up of new or reformulated products, and management of all co-manufacturers. To advise on product development or reformulation projects with guidelines from Production/Quality Control.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY
Within the limits of authorized corporate policies, procedures, and budgets, he/she is responsible for, and has commensurate authority to accomplish the duties as set forth below.  The following duties are all essential functions and responsibilities.

I. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

      • Project Management
        • Responsible to provide overall project coordination for all new and existing products. Interface with all appropriate departments and activities such as purchasing, production, sales, customer service, finance, & quality assurance to ensure that all required information is accurately maintained and implemented.
        • Maintain database of finished product information, including formulations, nutritional information, quality assurance documents, etc. Organize information to ensure accuracy; archive any obsolete documents.
        • Assist in the label approval process to ensure accurate information is available and compliant with appropriate regulatory agencies.
        • Coordinate with Sales, Customer service and/or Production for the development of new items/packaging and private label projects.
        • Provide direct support and technical expertise to the Sales, Customer Service and Quality Assurance departments.
        • Responsible for obtaining all necessary internal approvals with regard to formulation, processing, packaging or label changes.
        • Manage all outsourced technical or culinary projects with freelance consultants/agencies, including product formulation projects, shelf-life testing, and/or recipe development.
      • Supplier & Co-manufacturer Management
        • Responsible for maintaining agreements and relationships with external manufacturers; collecting appropriate technical and food safety documentation; provide direction on product development needs; coordinate pricing and packaging requirements
        • Assist Production Manager in sourcing new suppliers for raw materials and packaging
      • Business Development
        • Investigate and recommend new co-manufacturers and/or new products from co-manufacturers and advise on new products that would benefit the company’s goals
        • Compile competitive product and manufacturer information and advise company on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
        • Monitor and research trends in food products/ingredients, processing, equipment, and marketing.

II. MARGINAL DUTIES

  • Complete all necessary forms and reports as needed in a timely manner.
  • Assist Quality Control Manager and Customer Service Manager in the development of finished product specifications and completion of customer documentation.
  • Complete other related duties when assigned.

III. GENERAL CORPORATE

  • Assist immediate supervisor, officers, management, and outside consultants as needed or directed.
  • Follow the Company’s safety and quality guidelines.
  • Meet Company goals.
  • R&D Representative on HACCCAP and Recall team

IV. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • College degree in science or business
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Computer skills

V. PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in food product development or processing; quality control; business development; or other related technical/scientific experience
  • Understanding of general food safety/HACCP principles and federal food regulations
  • Desired: understanding of nutritional labelling software, ERPs, MS Office suite
