Job Summary
The R&D Tech II position will support the R&D Manager in driving new product initiatives from idea creation to launch.

As Kiva's R&D Technician, you'll...

    • Support new product development (NPD) by working on technical formulations, sensory validation, shelf life studies, and competitive and feasibility assessments, with support from the R&D Manager
    • Support the R&D Manager on formulations at benchtop and scale-up/ tech transfer for various formats such as confectionery (chocolate and candy -chews, gummies), solid dosage formats ( tablets, capsules, coating) and beverage (RTD) formulations 
    • Assist with building external suppliers and vendor relationships including sourcing of ingredients and documentation 
    • Support product testing requirements by assisting with development of ingredient and product quality specifications
    • Travel to partner states for training and product development support on occasion. 

What we're looking for...

    • 2-4 years of combined R&D experience in nutraceuticals or food/dietary supplement/ pharma/ consumer packaged goods
    • Prefer product development background in confectionery (chocolate and candy -chews, gummies), solid dosage formats ( tablets, capsules, coating) and beverage (RTD) formulations
    • Minimum high school level education or equivalent
    • Knowledge of benchtop and scale-up equipment and processing in a GMP facility is desirable
    • Pilot plant experience is preferred 
    • Adept at vendor communication for sourcing of ingredients and documentation
    • Analytical skills for collecting, assessing and presenting experimental data and results
    • Experience in Cannabis industry desired 
    • Previous experience with tablets and beverage formulation is desirable 
    • Strong communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and project execution skills
    • Organization and time management skills with ability to multitask and juggle multiple requests and projects in a fast-paced environment 
    • Ability to cross-train other technicians and cross-functional stakeholders 
    • Must have proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    • Preferred proficiency in Project management software

Job Summary
The R&D Process Development Engineer will fill a critical role in partnering with R&D formulators and production managers by developing process parameters for multiple product platforms; through the various stages of formulation development and, ensuring that the new product is ready and compliant for manufacturing and packaging, meets quality standards; with an outlook to de-risk commercialization and launch delays. 
 
This individual will be the Technical Manager for all things Process and is responsible for coordinating all efforts in alignment with Formulators for successful development of manufacturing processes, scale up and technical transfer of various ingredients, process and product technologies; serve as a subject matter expert to support product/process improvements, and build on continuous improvement of existing manufacturing efficiencies, across Kiva’s product portfolio which includes chocolates, confections, beverages and solid dosage.
 

As Kiva's Process Development Engineer, you'll...

    • Delivers and oversees all R&D to scale-up activities for process development, process improvement and tech transfer to scale up of manufacturing processes from R&D (lab scale) into pilot batch (R&D batches) and full manufacturing scale (commercial) 
    • Co-development partner to formulators and production managers on all the Product Tech Transfer (Laboratory-to-Production Floor) for both the Confection and Solid Dosage platform 
    • Determine requirements for stability and engineering studies for product/process development 
    • Advises on Capital needs for Confection and Solid Dosage platform development and improvement projects 
    • Focuses on process efficiencies and metrics as OEE and/or assessing equipment/process to foresee limitations on future formulas 
    • Recommends requirements with a critical eye for future site designs and process line expansion within the solid dosage and confection platform 
    • Detailed attention to process development, optimization, monitoring, testing measurements and present technical reports and presentations 
    • Conduct scientific investigations, experimental design to effectively troubleshoot formulation, process and commercial manufacturing issues. 
    • Conducts root cause analysis to establish preventive and corrective action
    • Communicate and collaborate clearly/extensively with other departments to assure the established project timelines and deliverables are progressing per agreement to achieve project goals
    • Developing and communicating process designs through the use of process flow diagrams, and identifying equipment and vendors to meet product and process requirements 
    • Recommend systems to improve manufacturing efficiency and automation to increase production capacity 
    • Engineering solutions to production problems and innovating enhancements to safe and efficient material handling and manufacturing processes 
    • Facilitating and contributing to creating future co-manufacturing and co-packing strategies to meet evolving market needs

What we're looking for...

    • BS in an Engineering discipline and 5+ years of experience in dietary supplement/nutraceutical or consumer goods/ food and/or beverage process manufacturing in a GMP environment
    • 5 years of combined R&D - Process Development experience (Product & Packaging) in nutraceuticals or food/dietary supplement/ pharma/ consumer packaged goods
    • Knowledge about USDA, and FDA food processing as well as HAACP, OSHA, SQF and other food production standards 
    • Scaling processes from lab, pilot to full-scale production 
    • Leading projects from concept through validation: equipment specification, installation, commissioning, qualification, and verification 
    • Prefer process engineering background in confectionery (chocolate and candy -chews, gummies), solid dosage formats ( tablets, capsules, coating) and beverage (RTD) formulations 
    • Knowledge of equipment and scaling processes from benchtop to pilot scale and full scale production equipment in a GMP facility is desirable

SUMMARY OF POSITION
Food Scientist position will support R&D projects related to new product development, existing product quality improvement initiatives, equipment validations, sensory and regulatory support. Position will work closely with cross-functional teams in Marketing, Sales, Operations, Regulatory, Quality, and external suppliers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical support to cross-functional teams in Marketing, Sales, Operations, Regulatory, Quality, and external suppliers.
  • Support formulation of new products and managing product development from ideation to commercialization, while meeting tight project timelines.
  • Provide technical support and problem-solving support to operations to help improve product quality, food safety, and manufacturing productivity.
  • Support validation testing across unit operations such as pasteurization and roasting. 
  • Lead regulatory activities like creating and verifying nutritional labels, working closely with WPA regulatory/legal team, and addressing nutrition related customer and consumer queries.
  • Lead sensory program by designing, executing, analyzing, and reporting results and recommendations (descriptive analysis, shelf life testing, discrimination testing, and consumer research).
  • Maintain accurate project files, specifications, and project data.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy work environment by adhering to established safety, health, and wellness practices.

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitate, innovate, and implement product development and evaluation as a function of quality, integrity, sensory, non-GMO status, nutritionals, efficiency of production, production specifications, testing requirements, costing functions, etc.
  • Act as a liaison for new product development between sales, marketing, purchasing departments and suppliers directly.
  • Support, coordinate, and conduct trial and start up of new products. Finalize product and process specifications for start-up of new items. Conduct Organoleptic surveys and evaluation of products. Maintain product development records.
  • Investigate and implement product development efforts for food products with specific nutritional and other health benefits as goals.
  • Provide product and nutritional information both internally and to Sales Representatives when needed.
  • Evaluate product stability, and acquire knowledge of product shelf lives and maintain records.
  • Focus on the science of product development of the new Sun Ridge products. (functionality, stability, appearance, taste, textures, etc). • Cost considerations "designed in" as they pertain to ingredients and manufacturing.
  • Work with purchasing to determine ingredient availability and reliability (ability to meet our vendor approval standards).
  • Work with Production Department to scale-up the manufacturing process environment with an actual "hand off' to the manufacturing teams to ensure production reliability and repeat ability.
  • Assist with activities and documentation of all Food Safety Programs, including HACCP, Allergen Control Plan, & GMP's. Assist with monthly HACCP and GMP audits of all departments to ensure compliance with Food Safety Programs. Assist with all Customer and Third Party audits and inspections. Assist with all actual and mock product recall exercises. Assist with customer questions and complaints. Comply with all regulatory requirements.
  • Provide Label Department with nutritional ingredient format, label proofing and creating and modifying labels on an on-going basis.

Requirements:

  • BS in Food Science.
  • Knowledge and understanding in food nutrition, food microbiology and shelf life.
  • Team working skills with team collaboration. Ability to interact with marketing, sales, production, purchasing, and senior management and document product feedback and formula revisions.
  • Understand regulatory issues regarding food and nutrition. Be familiar with or have ability to learn food labeling software including Genesis.
  • Understand food preservation and food safety, food regulations, HACCP and GMP. Relevant certification is highly preferred.
  • Strong documentation skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to work in industrial and kitchen lab environment with food allergen familiarity and taste all food products with objectivity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication is necessary.
