The R&D Manager leads a team of Chocolate Technologists and a Technician to deliver new products and product renovations across Everyday Squares, Intense Dark, Seasons and Baking Businesses. They act as a strategic partner with their cross-functional teams such as Marketing, Procurement, Operations and Project Management. The role is located at HQ1 in San Leandro.

Essential Functions

  • Lead the team that envisions, creates and continuously improves Ghirardelli products across the Branded Confections and Baking businesses. This role has 3 direct reports.
  • Accountable for overall product design, formula cost, development, and commercialization of new products
  • Stay up to date on industry best practices and continuously improve internal processes
  • Lead product renovation projects to continuously improve existing products
  • Work closely with Brand Managers, Marketing Directors and R&D Director to ensure all of their businesses have a robust and profitable 3 year innovation pipeline
  • Lead strategic conversations and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Oversee the accuracy and completeness of all technical documentation, including but not limited to Specs, formulas, SOP’s, and work instructions
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert and R&D function approver for the Project, Ingredient and Formula processes within the PLM Software environment (DevEx)
  • Effectively communicate, both written and oral, to all levels of the organization
  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of the team. Create an inclusive environment that embraces our values and purpose
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned or as necessary

Specific Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelors or Master’s in Food Science or closely related field
  • 7+ years’ experience in Food/CPG industry with a preference for experience in confections and/or baking
  • Strong presentation and public speaking abilities
  • High level of detail orientation and project management skills
  • Experience with PLM systems such as DevEx a plus
  • Prior experience in managing direct report(s), or a strong desire to do so
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to work seated or standing for at least 8 hours
  • Must be able to travel up to 10% of time, including some international travel

Salary: $125K-$150K/yr. + Bonus Eligibility

Essential Functions:
  • Support development on new product formulations of food and beverage products in various delivery formats.
  • Work with the R&D Lead Scientist to evaluate formulations for customer approval. 
  • Input formula data into ESHA Genesis R&D to calculate nutrition facts panels when needed.
  • Utilize knowledge of food ingredients, food science principles, and consumer marketing insights to help develop new products and formulas.
  • Assume the role of an innovator demonstrating initiative, creativity, and thoroughness in the execution of complex projects.
  • Conduct a wide range of analytical, sensory, consumer, shelf life, and product stability studies.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with the Applications and Flavor teams.
  • Develop new food formulations that meet customers' needs and demonstrate the performance of our flavors and technologies in the application.
  • Work in an organized manner following Standard Operating Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices, and the Company’s Safety Procedures.
  • Prepare mixing equipment and work area(s) as needed to complete batching samples.
  • Accurately notate all required information including but not limited to quantities, lot numbers and mixing information.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Chemistry, Related Field, or 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working in a lab environment.
  • Capable of following written instructions, able to effectively work with computers and computerized equipment with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge on Excel. Experience with Genesis R&D is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to organize high volumes of projects and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Open and honest communicator.
  • Strong attention to detail and be able to keep accurate records of formulations.
  • Have a great work ethic and able to work well in a collaborative setting.
  • Candidate will be expected to handle and consume all 8 major food allergens.
  • Close proximity to our facility in Benicia, CA.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. or more.

ABCO LABORATORIES, INC.
Product Development Formulator

ABCO Laboratories is a contract manufacturing business that works with customers to develop and produce dietary supplements including solid dose formulations (capsules & tablets) as well as liquid products.

Responsibilities:

  • Create new products from concept development thru formulation
  • Prepare samples and documentation
  • Source new raw materials
  • Create specifications
  • Validate Master Formula work instructions
  • Manage pilot batch/first production runs
  • Assess accuracy of product labels
  • Advise production personnel as needed for new or existing products
  • Investigate deviations to production batches and issue corrections

Requirements:

  • BS in Chemistry, Food Science, Nutrition or related field
  • 4-7 years of experience developing Dietary Supplements
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Working knowledge of cGLP and Dietary Supplement FDA/GMP regulations

ABCO LABORATORIES, INC.
QC Chemist

Summary:
ABCO Laboratories is a contract manufacture business that works with customers to make and develop a variety of food seasonings, spices and dietary supplements.

Requirements for this position are the following: BS in Chemistry, 2-3 years of prior experience performing HPLC analysis in an analytical laboratory and the ability to work with food allergens (except peanuts) on a regular basis is required.

Duties for the QC Analyst include: Testing incoming dietary supplement raw materials as well as in process and finished products. Maintaining accurate record of analysis to company standards and competently using a variety of bench instruments such as FTIR (Thermo), Refractive Index, pH meters, and UV-Vis spectroscopy and HPLC. Preparing and submitting samples for in house and 3rd party laboratory testing along with performing data review and release of raw materials and finished goods (electronic and physical).

The ideal candidate for this position should have 2-3 years of analytical laboratory experience and be familiar with various types of HPLC instrumentation including but not limited to 1220 Agilent Integrated HPLC systems and modular Shimadzu systems and how to troubleshoot and maintain them in good working order. The ideal candidate will have experience in method development, validation, and documentation. We are looking for someone who can think critically, be a team-player as well as an independent worker, and perform work tasks efficiently.

Schedule:
Monday-Friday. 6:00am-2:30pm.

SUMMARY:
Provides effective and functional technical leadership for customized formulations, product innovations, and product optimization projects. Leads product and process development from ideation/pre-formulation through commercialization. Leverages technical insights and product development skills to develop and commercialize new products for current and potential customers. Utilizes standard best practices and procedures in conjunction with hands on formulating, scale up and commercialization support. Close partnership with Sales, customers, and cross-functional departments to accomplish company and personal goals.

DUTIES:

  • Supports Protein Research’s Kosher, CCOF (Organic), GFCO, and other certifications.
  • Supports Protein Research’s production team with any product issues to determine ways to improve formulation to optimize production processing.
  • Partners with local Packaging companies to leverage vendor and network contacts to identify and recommend preferred packaging options for new product opportunities in the Protein Research facility.
  • Supports the R&D team through the identification and sourcing of new, and novel ingredients.
    Gains full command of internal formulation system for development and commercialization.
  • Develops a network of outside contacts such as customers, vendors, consultants and educators.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry or equivalent.

  • Experienced working with flavor systems and sensory evaluation techniques.
  • Strong formulation skills. Firm understanding of ingredient functionality and nutrition.
  • A sound foundation in Food Science and Chemistry.
  • Nutritional Facts and Supplement Facts Regulatory knowledge a plus
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience conducting plant trials/process validation testing.
  • Familiarity of product shelf-life testing techniques and procedures a plus.

  • This position may be exposed to small particles, odors, and allergens.
