POSITION OVERVIEW

Our new Senior Director of Engineering will contribute significantly and help lead strategy, planning, target-setting, operational and organizational effectiveness.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to the Engineering team
  • Communicate engineering successes while illustrating the business value of delivered capabilities.
  • Work with executive leadership to set expectations, manage risks, dependencies and tradeoffs inevitable in complex project delivery
  • Lead the design and development of membrane processing systems
  • Provide engineering guidance for product manufacturing
  • New product development (i.e next-gen membrane elements and systems for new applications)
  • Delivery of custom systems to our current customer base and transitioning to more scalable modular systems

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience designing and delivering complex fluid processing solutions from P&IDs to equipment selection to detailed design.
  • Experience transitioning from custom-engineered process solutions to scalable modular solutions
  • Experience with automated manufacturing of membranes and packaging for manufacturability
  • Knowledge of food and beverage system design, sanitary components, and design for cleanability. Knowledge of reverse osmosis system design a plus.
  • Knowledge of PLC controlled automated systems, panel design, and electrical components.
  • Experience piloting wastewater and/or food and beverage systems.
  • Experience designing injected molded parts a plus.
  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 10+ years of Engineering experience at technology-led organizations.
  • 5+ years managing and leading teams or in delivering large/multi-disciplined project
  • Strong leadership skills with a passion for building/growing businesses
  • Experience in membrane processing and/or food equipment manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated flexibility in adapting to a wide variety of tasks and functions.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Manufacturing Design Engineer will design and build a new manufacturing line for membrane elements.

The person in this position will design components and assemblies from scratch, generate prints, source off-the-shelf items and specify custom components. This includes the design, fabrication and documentation of automated systems, as well as to design and implement robotic manufacturing systems to support the Porifera’s innovative water reuse and product concentration systems.

The ideal candidate for this role has strong interpersonal skills, organization and attention to detail, with the ability to visualize processes and objects.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the design and build of automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Investigate equipment challenges and determine appropriate remedies.

  • General knowledge of manufacturing methods and basic safety procedures.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD, preferably Autodesk Inventor or Fusion 360.
  • Experience with water, wastewater, or plastic injection molding and mold modification, food processing, sanitary equipment, or food contact code compliance, a plus.
  • Computer programming (C,C++, BNR, Allen-Bradley PLC programming) a plus.

Responsibilities

The Role…

This is a technical expert R&D position; this position will coordinate all aspects R&D pilot line operation to support product development for assigned projects.  This position will demonstrate joint accountability (with R&D product development managers) for project success by assembling, evaluating, maintaining, and optimization of prototypes and pilot runs and capturing relevant formulation, such as sequence addition of ingredients and processing parameters.  This position schedules requested activities with proper equipment allocation for the R&D pilot plant facility.  Prototype and bench samples production/storage/shipping, raw ingredients/ bench samples inventory management and documentation management will be in scope for this position.  This position works with limited supervision.   Staying up-to-date on latest ingredient technology and attending co-man bench and plant trials to ensure successful commercialization of products is in scope for this position.

Pilot Line Operations: 80% of Time

  • Coordination of Test Kitchen/pilot line activities to support various product development projects/initiatives: from ordering materials to production/packaging/labeling of prototypes while ensuring all validations, documentation and requirements are met (safety, food safety plan, master sanitation).   Share learnings and capture ideas to improve product and/or processes
  • Set up, calibrate operate, clean/sanitize, troubleshoot and coordinate maintenance of all test kitchen/pilot plant equipment and areas
  • Create/update SOPS and execute checks and checklists for safety, food safety, master sanitation and 5 S schedule for test kitchen/pilot plant area
  • Establish and maintain inventory management system for all pilot line equipment, parts and supplies and cultivate good working relationships with suppliers
  • Execute food safety plan for pilot plant operation
  • Execute master sanitation schedule for pilot plant facility
  • Maintain housekeeping and organization of pilot line areas

R&D Documentation: 10% of Time

  • Lab and/or pilot line documentation: SOPs, ingredient/sample records, inventory records, formulation and processing notes, cleaning records

R&D Department Support: 10% of Time

  • Train other R&D team members to operate and clean pilot plant equipment 
  • Provide insight/recommendations into continuous improvement of operations (Safety, schedules, sequence, staging, processing parameters for equipment) 
  • Stay up to date with latest pilot plant equipment through vendor contacts etc.

About the Role
The analytical department at Endless West assists R&D scientists in creating new sensory profiles and recreating familiar flavors in popular spirits and cocktails. We are looking for a talented and experienced analytical chemist to become the analytical department manager. This person will report to the R&D Director. The analytical department lead will oversee day-to-day function in this department; including but not limited to troubleshooting instrumentation issues, training and managing analytical chemists in the department, keeping track of a chemical and consumables inventory, maintaining instruments and managing service contracts as well as following up and scheduling, and managing the overall efficiency and data quality and output for this department.

Who We’re Looking for/About You
A successful candidate will be part of a vibrant and multidisciplinary R&D team working towards the development of novel molecular spirits. As the lead of the analytical department, the candidate will have either extensive experience in an analytical chemistry lab (including experience in a supervisory role); or a MS or PhD in a chemical discipline with emphasis in biochemistry or analytical chemistry with experience in characterization of small volatile and non-volatile molecules that contribute to the overall flavor and aroma characteristics of spirits. This candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, a good communicator/manager, and a creative problem-solver.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of analytical strategies for the chemical characterization of new products
  • Supervise or conduct hands-on analytical characterization of different technologies to establish key functionalities of new and existing products
  • Lead method development for product screening, quant, and discovery workflows
  • Lead and implement best data analyses and data visualization practices (including statistical analysis for GCMS and LCMS data)
  • Responsible for managing and maintaining an analytical laboratory equipped with a GC/TOF-MS, GC/MS/MS, and LC/MS that supports multidisciplinary research projects
  • Support the development of new tools and protocols to assess new processes and modes of action of different technologies by actively collaborating and communicating with colleagues from other teams and disciplines
  • Oversee and maintain service contracts, consumables, instruments, and anything necessary for daily laboratory function
  • Provide mentorship and training for research scientists to conduct analytical chemical/biochemical analysis
  • Apply up to date characterization techniques to identify active molecules in complex mixtures
  • Lead discussion of approaches and results regularly in lab meetings and technical reports

Experience & Qualifications

  • 15+ years' experience in the analytical chemistry field or Master’s degree (with several years work experience) or PhD in Analytical Chemistry or related field
  • Identification and quantification of molecular structures through hands-on experience with relevant equipment such as LC-MS, GC-MS
  • Purification of compounds with column chromatography or other separation methods
  • Experience with a wide variety of data processing software, databases and informatics systems (ie Xcalibur, Compound Discoverer)
  • Demonstrated experience to manage an analytical lab that has multiple users and the ability to mentor and train others in analytical techniques
  • Food Analytical experience is a big plus (ie characterization of flavor compounds and related sensory attributes in collaboration with sensory departments/groups)
  • Experience working with isolation of commercially unavailable novel compounds is a bonus
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills are essential, as well as good oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and solve complex analytical problems
  • Ability to contribute to a team effort with flavor scientists, analytical chemists, and QC technicians for collaborative development of new product technologies

Job Description
The Primary function of the Quality Control technician is to conduct routine lab analysis during all phases of the production process. Attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, and accurately document results are essential to the job. Quality Control Technician hours are approximately for first shift 4:00am - 12:30pm or for second shift 12:30pm – 9:30pm. Overtime in this position is probable and schedule may change due to business needs.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Quality:
    • Follow HACCP standards as defined by written procedures
    • Attend QC related training
    • Participate in annual GMP training
    • Ensure batch sheets are correct
    • Ensure that all employees follow GMP’s and ensure effectiveness of training during daily inspections
    • Daily testing of water, plus sending water & other environmental samples for testing to an outside lab on a monthly basis
    • Inspection of registered glass & brittle plastic in the Processing Area on a bi-weekly basis (light protection monthly)
    • Perform pre-operational inspection
    • Verify refrigerators are operating at correct temperature daily.
    • Inspect waste bins daily & monitor accumulation of outside dumpster.
    • Inspect storage method, process, & handling of allergens during Daily Inspection
    • Release hold ingredients after confirmed C of A is correct
    • Organize documents on a weekly basis
    • Verify monitoring activities
    • Provide input on recall / withdrawal situations
    • Perform second check of outgoing shipments leaving the facility
    • Prepare shelf life samples based on the matrix given by the QA Manager
    • In process testing of product samples to ensure that they are within specifications (Quality or Samples)
    • Maintain / organize retain samples for all products produced
    • Send out a sample of every batch of retail & industrial finished products made to an outside lab for testing
  • Labels:
    • Prepare or verify labels for finished products
    • Double check labels & packaging information
    • Destroy all excess & out of date labels
  • Equipment:
    • Check daily calibration of standard thermometers against certified equipment
    • Check control panel thermometer against Standard Thermometer daily
    • Verify QC lab scale against a certified weight daily
    • Calibrate standard thermometer daily against NIST certified thermometer
    • Calibrate pH, salt, & brix meters daily
    • Perform hourly inspections on packaging machines
  • Additional responsibilities as required

Qualifications and Experience

  • 1- 2 years of Quality Control experience in food manufacturing preferred
  • Basic Understanding of GMPs
  • Some basic labeling experience preferred
  • Strong written and communication skills at all levels
  • Strong computer skills, such as excel, word, and internet
  • Knowledge of Food Processing equipment

  • Physical Demands/Efforts
    • Work requires occasional physical exertion including some lifting of objects weighing up to 35 pounds
    • Willing and able to stand for long periods of time
    • Willing and able to sit occasionally
    • Willing and able to walk to other areas of the plant often
    • Willing and able to type on computer for extended amount of time
  • Mental & Visual Demands
    • Work performed by this position requires a significant level of mental concentration to manage multiple complex tasks.
    • Work requires continuous visual effort for extended periods of time.
  • Work Environment and Hazards
    • Employee works in a manufacturing setting with frequent exposure to heat/cold, dust, or other factors that may require protective equipment and still pose a hazard.
    • This position has regular exposure to hazards that could result in significant injury and lengthy loss of time at work.
